Passage of a Federal Marriage Amendment would reverse the constitutional tradition of protecting individual freedoms.
  • The proposed amendment would deny the right to marry to gay and lesbian couples and, in so doing, obliterate family protections such as health insurance, pensions, inheritance and hospital visitations that other committed couples rely on.
  • The amendment could also invalidate all state and domestic partnership laws and nullify civil rights protections based on marital status.
  • There was a time when many Americans did not tolerate marriage between Catholics and Protestants, and the last law prohibiting people of different races from marrying was overturned 35 years ago; yet our laws continue to deny adults the basic right to marry simply because they are gay or lesbian.
